feb 06 2009· most belt grinders shop built & commercial are not overpowered. rule of thumb is to have a minimum of 1 hp per inch of belt width with the motor running at full rpm (60 hz in north america 50 hz in the rest of the world). my 2" belt burr king runs a 3 hp vector drive and i can't load it down at any speed even 10 hz with a 36 grit belt.
